Miguel Almonte

Born: 04/04/1993 (Age: 21)
Bats: Right Throws: Right
Height: 6' 1" Weight: 210
Mechanics
6’2” is probably right; filled out lower half a bit; easy, fast arm from ¾ arm slot; hides the ball a long time and has excellent deception; long stride to home and hips rotate in coordination with shoulders and arm comes through fast; can open up a bit early at times but mechanics are repeatable; ball explodes out of hand; creates good plane; throws front side through and delivery can show effort at times; complete command profile is presently below-avg.

Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
FB 65 93-96 97 sat 95, 96 most of the game; lot of arm-side life and good downhill plane; more control than command; comfort zone is arm-side down; needs refinement commanding glove side and effectively using the pitch as a chase up in the zone.
CH 70 82-85 86 money pitch; flashes plus-plus often; plus-plus arm action; plays extremely well off FB; great deception in pitch; big arm-side fade and vertical action; best off speed often; will throw it in any count; needs to command more in the zone making it an effective out pitch as a chase.
CB 55 76-79 80 showed tight spin and good 11-5 shape; showed some depth and good bite; flashed plus a few times; got double digit swing and misses with it and used it as K pitch instead of CH; at times got soft and lost tight shape; would like to see him repeat motion with more consistency and throw from same arm slot every time; was told coaching staff advised him to throw CB hard as he can, reason for the velo spike from last year; biggest improvement of a pitch I’ve ever seen.
Overall

Miguel Almonte is a very intriguing prospect. He is presently more of a thrower and the overall command profile and pitchability both need work. His CB has made great strides from last year to this year and I believe he's stopped throwing his SL in favor of working on the CB. It shows much better spin and tighter shape. He has shown the ability to throw it for a strike and a chase pitch. At times though, it can get soft and lose the tight shape and also lose effectiveness. Almonte's CH is his go to pitch. With more consistency throwing the pitch within the strike zone will allow it to play to it's full potential of plus-plus. The FB works at a plus-plus velocity but he has more control than command of it. Often, his mechanics will get out of whack and the ball can sail arm-side high. There's still a lot of development to go with Almonte but the stuff and work ethic are very real.
