Sean Hjelle

Born: 05/07/1997 (Age: 22)
Bats: Right Throws: Right
Height: 6' 11" Weight: 228
Mechanics
Extreme length from a frame that would tie major-league records for height. He’s filled out well for his length and has present strength and durability. Framework is here for a durable workhorse because of strength and consistency in his actions. Delivery creates difficult angles for hitters. Extreme extension causes discomfort at the plate. Comes from three-quarters angle with some crossfire. Motion is shockingly consistent for size and he repeats well with average arm speed.

Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
Fastball 55 91-94 94 Comes easy with plus-plus plane and extension. The pitch sinks and runs arm-side late with above-average movement. Profiles as a heavy pitch with above-average command.
Curveball 50 80-82 83 Comes out slurvy at times. Flashes two-plane action with 11/5 tilt when he gets on top of it. Lacks the hard bite of a plus breaker but can consistently show an average offering that flashes above-average multiple times. Above-average command potential.
Changeup 50 85-87 88 Good arm speed with average fade. Flashes above-average when he replicates fastball movement with the right arm speed. Needs further refinement with feel, as he sometimes casts and slows his actions. Average command potential.
Overall

It’s not at all out of the question that Hjelle could bump a grade on one or two of these pitches. A little more fastball velocity could turn the pitch into a true weapon, while the breaking ball could tighten a little more and start showing enough bite to profile consistently above-average. There’s maybe a little more here because Hjelle has above-average command potential. He repeats exceptionally well for his size, which creates tough angles and huge extension. Put these factors together and he’s a safe no. 4 with a 3/4 ceiling.
