Matt Allan

Born: 04/17/2001 (Age: 18)
Bats: Right Throws: Right
Height: 6' 3" Weight: 225
Mechanics
Despite his power arsenal, the throwing motion is fairly clean with a little effort and some head whack. The arm circle gets a tad long but it's a fluid delivery and the ball really jumps out of his hand. He does a good job out of the windup of collecting himself, using a pausing, methodical approach that he repeats consistently, and getting downhill and without too heavy of a landing. His front shoulder can get a little high, making it difficult for his arm to clear and leading to elevated balls on occasion. But he's athletics and only minor delivery tweaks are needed, which he should be able to accommodate fairly easily.

Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
Fastball 70 93 96 Has good velocity and a live arm, could see even higher radar readings in the coming years while on a professional strength program. Not a ton of movement to the fastball, but does have some late life to it. Targeted the ball down at the bottom of zone a lot but would be better served attacking at the top of the zone with his four-seamer.
Curveball 60 77 81 Big, power 12/6 breaker with good finish. Able to throw for strikes and use as a chase pitch, can really locate to any part the catcher sets up. Perfectly pairs with his fastball, coming out of the same tunneled release point.
Changeup       Only threw during warm-up pitches
Overall

Very athletic prep hurler with projection to improve on already strong tool set. Fastball command could use some work, as he controls his curveball much better at present. Pitches project well as high-fastball, low-curveball tandem and can work as a very successful pairing. Third pitch (changeup) is a distant weapon that will need some work, but the body, athleticism, and arm talent all point towards a future power pitcher with above-average stuff. As with all prep power pitchers, there is inherent risk, but Allan is a project worth investing in.
