Jack Leiter

Born: 04/21/2000 (Age: 19)
Bats: Right Throws: Right
Height: 6' 1" Weight: 195
Mechanics
Unusually good arm action and motion for a high school pitcher. Repeats extremely well. Gets solid extension, but he's not particularly tall, and he's not a projectable physical specimen in the way some hope for with a high school pitcher pick. Shows some athleticism on the mound and at the plate.

Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
Fastball 60 91-96 96 Was a tick or two higher than I have him listed on 5/11 per an industry source, but I have yet to personally register him over 96. In both of my viewings, he was able to hold this velocity for around 80 pitches, and then dipped after. Advanced command and pitchability. Has some significant cut on the higher end of this velo band, and can also run it extremely well in the 91-93 area. This is more than enough fastball to get hitters out already, and there's demonstrated potential for a little more, which makes the projectability concerns a bit overblown in my estimation.
Curveball 70 74-79 79 Elite 12-to-6 curve with two-plane break. Already consistently plus, and one of the most developed off-speed pitches you'll see at this level. Fully on par with Jay Groome's breaking ball from the 2016 Draft. Should continue to be his out pitch moving forward.
Slider 50 81-86 86 Flashed above-average, but only occasionally for me. Too many came in flat and without much depth or break. Improvement here is likely to make or break the overall outcome.
Overall

Son of former MLB All-Star Al Leiter. Advanced in all ways for a prep pitcher, including command, mechanics, and pitchability. Is already 19, and a Vandy commit from a wealthy family, so may not be signable; could re-enter draft as a draft-eligible sophomore in 2021.

Overall, Leiter presents a middle-to-high first-round grade for me, based on an advanced fastball and incredible feel for spin. There is some relief risk inherent to moving to a pro schedule, and I have slight concerns over his in-game velocity loss. He projects to a potential mid-rotation starter with higher possibilities if the slider jumps. Alternately, he might develop a consistent changeup; he only threw a small handful of the latter in my two viewings, and it didn't show much.
